Sindhi Topi Day celebration plans gain momentum

KARACHI: Different political parties and representatives of civil society gathered on Thursday at the Karachi Press Club (KPC) to discuss plans to celebrate the ‘Sindhi Topi Day’ jointly on Dec 6.

A nine-member ‘Sindh Cultural and Heritage Committee’, headed by senior journalist Ajiz Jamali, was formed to coordinate and organise a rally from the KPC to the Sindh Assembly in connection with the day and also decided that all the participants of the rally would wear the traditional cap.

Jamali said the controversy had united the whole of Sindh, and people who did not like President Zardari have come to support him after the incident.

Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz, secretary general Dr Safdar Sarki was also of a similar opinion. “Naturally the issue has benefited President Zardari” he said, but added that the people of Sindh had shown a strong reaction as they consider the anchorperson’s comments as an attack on their culture. The PPP has supported the Sindhi Topi Day but with a different viewpoint by making it clear that it is not playing the ‘Sindh Card’.

PPP Sindh General Secretary Taj Haider said, “We support the day by considering the Sindhi culture as our own just like all other cultures of the country.”

“All the regional cultures contribute to the national culture and the PPP promotes them for strengthening the federation,” he said, adding that the party believes that promoting regional cultures is necessary for the unity of the country. “Let the flowers of hundred colours bloom,” he remarked.

PPP Karachi President, Najmi Alam, Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum’s Syed Muhammad Ali Shah, Sindh Taraqi Pasand Party’s Ali Hassan Chandio, Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz’s Illahi Bux Bikak, Sindh National Party’s Ali Dahri, SPO’s Illahi Bux Baloch, Karachi Press Club’s President, Imtiaz Khan Faran and others also attended the meeting.....LINK
