ISLAMABAD: The government is taking all possible measures to check the rising inflation in the country, Minister of State for Finance and Economic Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar informed the National Assembly on Tuesday.

Winding up a debate on the price-hike in the House, Hina said the prudent policies of the government had brought down food inflation – which stood at about 30 percent in the October to January period last year – to 9.6 percent.

The minister said special attention was being paid to the agriculture sector to check food inflation and a Rs 37 billion project had been initiated for establishing storage facilities and developing marketing infrastructure.

The NA also passed a resolution urging the government to take steps to control inflation in the country. Chaudhry Muhammad Barjees Tahir moved the resolution.

Replying to a calling attention notice regarding the release of limited funds for development projects during the first quarter of the current financial year, Hina said out of Rs 421 billion allocated for the Public Sector Development Programme, Rs 85 billion had been released during the first quarter.

She said revenue in the first quarter was always limited and the government had to match the expenditure prudently.

Hina said the government expected to receive during the ongoing quarter over $500 million out of the $5.2 billion pledged at the Tokyo Donors Conference. She said the government had just signed an agreement with the Saudi Fund for Development for $300 million, which would be available within the next fortnight. Also, $174 million would be received from the US within a week. .....Link......
